The 87th International Rice Festival has selected Joshua Spell as President to preside over the 2024 festivities. The annual event is the oldest and largest agricultural festival in Louisiana. This year’s festival will be held October 17th to October 20th in downtown Crowley. 

 

Born and raised in Crowley, Joshua is the son of Paul Spell and the late Barbara Matthews Spell. He has one sister Natacha Istre and a twin brother, Jeremy.

 

 At the early age of fourteen, Joshua began his work in the Restaurant industry at Chef Roy’s in Crowley.  In 1999, he went on to work for Fezzo’s Seafood, Steakhouse and Oyster Bar as their Head Chef.  Joshua has been employed with Fezzo’s for 25 years, playing an integral part in the growth, turning Fezzo’s into a multi-location operation. 

 

In more recent years, he has taken on the role of General Manager for the Crowley location.  Joshua has been a member of The American Culinary Federation since 1999 and is also a restaurant member of the Louisiana Restaurant Association. 

 

Over 30 years ago, Josh began his journey with the Rice Festival as a Tractor Driver for the Parade Committee. From that point on, Josh knew he wanted to be a part of one of the greatest organizations in our area and learn more about the organization over the years.  During his time with the festival, he has served as General Chairman from 2019-2021, Chairman of the Parade Committee and member of the By-Laws, Entertainment and Rice and Gravy Cookoff committees.

Joshua reminds us that rice is not only a part of life here in Crowley but throughout our state. From the field to the table, rice is a favorite whether in Jambalaya, Gumbo, Boudin, etouffee and the list goes on.
